new favorites: if you like the banned books bracelet

You love shopping at The Afternoon for the holidays, but eventually you run into a problem--you've already given our most popular gifts, and now you are left, once again, with no clue what to get The Person Who Has Everything.  No problem! We've developed a series of gift guides based on our favorite products--so if you got them "the perfect present" last year, you can continue the trend!

Created for the American Library Association Office of Intellectual Freedom, the I Read Banned Books Bracelet is a favorite of many the librarian and the bibliophile, and has been a go-to present for many of our customers over the years. The links of the bracelet feature reproductions of book covers from works that have been challenged or subject to censorship.  If you want a gift for a special someone who is both smart AND subversive, these books and journals could be just the thing:

1. Fearless Girls, Wise Women, & Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World is an anthology of strong female role models, from warrior queens and girls who use wisdom and kindness to solve even the most daunting of dilemmas.  An inspiration for girls big and small, it's a great gift for girls who want to change the world.

2. All the News UNFit to Print is a fascinating book about "how things were...and how they were reported."  The lady who reads banned books will be captivated by how many times the news has been bent, skewed, and outright fabricated...and how these fabrications have shaped the world.

3. Women's Wicked Wisdom gives a girl quotations for every occasion from some of the sharpest, funniest, and most poignant women in history. One of my favorites?
"I've given my momoirs far more thought than any of my marriages. You can't divorce a book."--Gloria Swanson

4.Want to get something that will inspire her creativity? Keri Smith makes the most amazing journals: journals that encourage you to rip, spill, and scribble, to wander in the woods and make secret codes.  Wreck This Journal and FNISH THS BK are two of her titles, and have prompts unlike anything you have ever seen.  The result is something joyful, destructive, and perfect for the person who thinks for herself.

Still clueless?  Come in to your nearest Afternoon location and let one of our staff find the perfect compliment to your already perfect gift!
