just a little bit of pretty

I've noticed a trend forming in our Westroads location. Groups of giggling ladies come in, go right to our bar section, and pick one (just one) of our brightly colored martini or margarita glasses to buy. Apparently it is a tradition in several of the local sorority houses to buy a girl her own "Pretty Glass" on her 21st birthday--the fancier the better--and this is for her and her drinks alone. And since The Afternoon has some of the most beautiful stemware in town, and because we are one of the few places to sell glasses individually, we've become a first stop on many 21st birthday party excursions. The original point of us selling glassware separately was so people could get odd numbers or replace pieces that were lost or broken in their own sets, but these girls have me thinking: why can't I just buy one glass? A set of four or six wine glasses seems to imply entertaining and guests (which I fully approve of) but if you have just one glass of a particular style, then that shows the world that this is your glass. One glass speaks of relaxation and pampering, of a moment to yourself that you get to make special. I was never in a sorority, I haven't been 21 for a while, and hot pink martini glasses (while gorgeous) are not my personal style. But maybe one of our Helios Balloon Goblets, with their hand-painted, delicate swirls of color, could be a more adult version of the "Pretty Glass" and make the glass of wine I have while cooking dinner into a decadent treat. So whether you're looking for a last-minute present or considering how to spend The Afternoon giftcards you asked for from Santa, maybe consider buying just one lovely piece of stemware for yourself, and add a little pretty to your routine.
